Why HERSTEEL

Women in industry have too often been expected to make do with workwear designed around men.

Room to work

Restrictive workwear gets in the way when you kneel, climb and reach, and it’s uncomfortable across a long shift. “You want that breathing room, and it’s just not there.” — Sophie

Fit matters on site

“If you don’t have the correct workwear, if it’s baggy, it’s not going to fit right. It can get entrapped in machinery.” — Sophie

HSE guidance asks employers to consider the wearer's size and fit when choosing protective equipment.

Valued on site

Workwear that fits says you were expected. Women deserve to feel welcome, comfortable and confident at work, and to stay in the industry.

HERSTEEL trousers are workwear and are not sold as certified personal protective equipment. Always follow your employer's PPE requirements.

Our story

It started with trousers.

Sophie never planned to be an engineer. After her GCSEs, her dad, a service engineer, suggested she give it a try. Her brother and grandad are engineers too. She started her apprenticeship at 17, often the only woman on the factory floor, and today works as an inspection and testing engineer.

One problem never went away. Women she worked with had tried again and again to find suitable workwear and got nowhere. In January 2026 she decided to solve it herself. It took months to find a manufacturer willing to design around women, and the first sample, in her words, “was absolutely horrendous”. But it was a starting point.

“We’ve always had meetings as women trying to find appropriate workwear for the job, and we just haven’t got anywhere with it. I just thought, I’m sick of this.”

“HERSTEEL is about feeling valued, feeling confident, feeling comfortable, feeling feminine.”
